Last week, Rabbi Bernstein zt”l, of Jerusalem, passed away after a painful struggle with illness. He left behind a widow, and 10 orphans. The Bernstein family are reportedly living in a state of dire poverty, unable to meet their needs for the upcoming holiday. Due to the severity of their situation, an emergency fund on their behalf has been launched.
Rav Chaim Kanievsky and a board of dayanim have approved the fund’s legitimacy and urgency.
Included on the fund page is video footage of 10-year-old Betzalel, a thin child with glasses and long blonde peyos, standing in what appears to be his kitchen. The emotional clip shows the shocked boy, still in the midst of shiva for his father, recording his urgent erev Pesach message.
“‘Please help my mother,” the boy pleads, implying that soothing his mother is more important to him than his own pangs of hunger & grief.
It is a devastating sight.
