Cancer Took Our Mom, And Everything Else We Had

When you’re a kid whose mom has cancer, there are a lot of these people tell you.

‘Everything’s going to be okay.”

‘This will all be over soon.”

But when my mom died last week, I knew it wasn’t going to be okay. After three years of watching her waste away, and our family slowly descending into poverty, she was gone. Now, as we get up from shiva, 6 boys who just lost their mom have to begin preparations for Pesach.

This will be our first seder without our mom. For the first time ever, us boys will have to cook, clean, and shop for the holiday without our mother’s help. This would all be painful enough, if it weren’t for the fact that we also can’t afford what we need. Her treatments took all the money we had.

In one week we will sit at a modest seder table, with our old clothing, very little food, and no mother.

While you clean and prepare for your own seder, I pray that you will open your hearts to remember what this week is like for me. If you can help us, we would appreciate it so much.

Thank you.
Yisrael, 15
