SimchaSpot Inbox: ‘What a Shame’

olms2The following email was sent to SimchaSpot.com

Background: Pictures of a chosson and kallah were posted on SimchaSpot.com.  However this picture was different from other listings. The Kallah was wearing a head covering which some people took offense and others mocked fun at the celebrants. SimchaSpot has decided to pull the Simcha listing as to limit the mockery and machlokes. Below is the email we received from an anonymous sender on this topic.

As a side note: We take abuse seriously. If someone has posted a picture without approval of celebrants, SimchaSpot will pull the listing and deactivate the users account. If someone has posted a Simcha without prior approval, please email us at SimchaSpot@gmail.com and we will remove right away.

I’m emailing to tell you that I’m unfollowing your account on Instagram. Big whoop, right? I’m one of thousands and I make zero difference in the grand scheme of things. You don’t know me and I don’t know you so what I’m going to say also might make no difference but I’m going to say it anyway because someone aught to tell you. When you post a picture, you allow hundreds of people to find out about a simcha and share in it’s excitement.

When you post a picture and allow for mockery and loshon hora, you not only severely detract from the simcha but you are the platform through which a tremendous amount of sinaas chinam is born, bred and shared with others. I’m thankful that there have been other individuals who have commented in a positive light and asked that you remove the picture for the sake of the bigger picture that is Torah Jewry – and our utmost goal of uniting Jews instead of creating rifts and arguments.

It sounds silly to attribute any sort of power to a silly Instagram account, but you do have power. You have the power to share happiness and simcha. That is the ONLY goal. anything negative that comes as a result of a picture you posted that wasn’t deleted, is using that “power” and showing the world just how broken we can be as a people. Please remember that.
