I went to pick up a girl for our first date, and I was super clear with the shadchan that we would be hiking and she should dress accordingly. I was told she loves the outdoors and wasn’t into formal, and would appreciate a really chill first date. I was wearing hiking clothes, which again, I was very clear about with the shadchan.
When I got there, her dad thought I was someone he hired to fix their sink. He said, “Wow, you’re early! Let me just take you upstairs quickly, we’re expecting someone.” I was confused but just went with it. He took me into his bedroom than to the bathroom and started showing me a leak in the sink. Once he asked where my tools were, I understood what was going on. I had to explain it, and it was probably the most awkward moment of my life, standing there in his bathroom explaining to him that I’m here to pick his daughter up for a date. He took me back downstairs and got his daughter. She came down in a dress and heels. He politely asked why I was dressed like this for a date. When I explained, his daughter was thrilled, ran upstairs, put on hiking clothes, and we left. We immediately got a call from the shadchan apologizing for forgetting to clarify. We got off to an awkward start, but she’s my wife now, and my father-in-law loves telling the story.
