Like most of us, you may not particularly like or understand modern art but
actually a modern art gallery has a lot going for it as an indoor shidduch date
venue.
It meets all our criteria: indoors; warm; provides seating for a quiet chat;
inexpensive or totally free; no yichud problems; and you’re not likely
to run into any people you know.
There are different shows all the time, with many top contemporary artists. You
could walk around from one art gallery to another on a Sunday afternoon with
your shidduch date and spend absolutely nothing but your time.
Why davka a modern art gallery, you may ask? Why not a regular traditional art gallery where the pictures actually look like recognizable things such as a vase of pretty flowers or green trees in a field? The problem with traditional art is that it also includes some highly untznius pictures of human beings, which would be most embarrassing and inappropriate for a frum couple to see.
The fact that modern art pictures don’t actually look like anything real will also provide you with lots of speculation in your conversation.
You could even make it into a game to see who can come up with the most interesting story about a picture. This could be fun, especially if you have no idea what you’re talking about! Also it can give you some great insights into each other that you might not see on an ordinary kind of date.
Moishy: So what do you think that picture is supposed to be?
Shaindy: Mm, well, if it was turned sideways, I’d say it looks like a big orange balloon tied to the roof of a little blue Honda.
Moishy: thinking – Maybe she’d really like to buy a car?
Shaindy: What do you think it is?
Moishy: To me, it sort of looks like a bowl of fruit on the back of a blue horse.
Shaindy: thinking – Fruit – is he getting hungry for a snack? But a horse?
Does that mean he really wants to get away?
Moishy: Okay, how about this picture? Actually, I kind of like it. It reminds me of the one my little nephew Dani drew of his toy train.
Shaindy: You know, I can see that! Except I don’t think little Dani sold his picture for fifty thousand dollars.
Moishy: Fifty thousand for that? I should start drawing pictures like that too!
