Something’s Fishy About This: An Aquarium As A Shidduch Date Venue

An aquarium is actually a perfect place to go for several reasons. You can walk around and talk, look at, and comment on the fish. It’s a great way to get to know each other better.  Perfect for a Sunday afternoon date, you can dress comfortably and casually. She can wear flats. It has lots going for it and is educational as well as fun.

Definitely different from a typical hotel lobby or coffee shop date.
It shows you’re special and unique and can think outside the box.

Of course admission isn’t free, but it’s still relatively inexpensive compared to a meal in a restaurant.

Best of all, you will have plenty of opportunity for conversation.  You can exchange fish stories and learn more about each other’s lives.

Moishy: “You know, I can still remember the pet goldfish I won at a Purim carnival when I was ten. Come to think of it, it was the only pet I had my entire childhood. I named him Fishele. Not very creative, I guess, but he did look a bit like a kid in my class named Fishel.”

Shaindy:  I had goldfish too when I was a kid. Once I went to a wedding where they had goldfish in a bowl on the tables instead of flower centerpieces. Kind of different, huh? The guests could take them home if they wanted but mine didn’t live too long after that.”

Moishy notes that Shaindy has managed to include the subject of weddings again.  So he’s wondering: is she giving him a hint or was it just a casual comment?

Now he’s feeling a bit tense but watching fish swim around is cool and calming. Of course, that’s why there are aquariums in dentist’s waiting rooms.

They also help relieve the stress of making a good impression or how the date is working out.

At the New York aquarium you can see more than just fish: there are also seals, walruses, otters and penguins.

Just do a little research ahead of time, and you can really impress your shidduch date with your knowledge!

Moishy:  Do you know why those penguins call loudly to each other during their daily feedings? It’s one way they strengthen their connection to each other.”

Shaindy:  Personally I’d rather have a quiet chat over coffee but whatever floats their boat…”

If you live in, near, or happen to be in Baltimore, the aquarium there is considered to be one of the best. The huge tanks are overwhelming in size. You can take an elevator up to a floor where you walk directly into a ‘rainforest’.  They have dolphins there too.  Admission actually costs more than at the NY aquarium but if you happen to be in Baltimore anyway, it’s an amazing place to go.

If by any chance your shidduch date happens to be petrified by fish, namely, she has ichthyophobia, then suggest someplace else and also stay away from fish restaurants!
