90 years ago today the Harlem Globetrotters played their first game. Coach and founder Abe Saperstein sewed the all-black team’s red, white and blue uniforms himself and drove the players 50 miles west of Chicago to Hinckley, IL, for the game.

Saperstein died in 1966. But the Globetrotters live on — the world’s most famous basketball team has won thousands of games and played in more than 120 countries.
